Co-optation

Absorbing the rival instead of destroying it: neutralizing the opposition by including it in the system rather than suppressing it. It is the most asymmetric form of coalition — the form in which the weaker side, by entering the alliance, takes on the risk of being almost entirely absorbed. The dissident taken inside is obliged to redefine its demand in the language of the system. What makes co-optation possible is that the same word — justice, right, freedom — refers to different things depending on class position: substance for the lower class, instrument for the middle class.
