The distance between reality and perception. Other species have it too, but it is short: perception is tied to the body and is tested at the first encounter. Nomos widens this distance through choice, scale and linear time-consciousness: the real can be presented not as it is but as it works, power is represented by symbols, and tomorrow is weighed as well. Its consequence in leadership is that the subjective front of the legitimacy test becomes winnable through perception; the verdict of reality can only be deferred.
