Affiliative
Affiliative function
One of the two independent functions of Physis: the relational function — it forms bonds, holds the group together, produces balance and repair. Empathy, reciprocity, the sense of justice and the raw drive behind freedom belong here. Its distinguishing property is that it is sensitive to scale: strong in the immediate circle, weak at scale; when it hits the ceiling of face-to-face relation, the norm — Nomos — has to take the work over. The other half of structural asymmetry comes from here. It has two faces: the relational face, which runs in the ordinary state, and the fusion face, which is triggered only in the state of exception (fraternity).
