Role / status

The criterion of the distinction fits in one sentence: a role is not claimed, status is claimed. A role belongs to the task, not to the person: it is distributed according to the capacity the task requires, it ends when the task ends, and the same person may be in another role the next moment. A role produces no ranking — two roles stand side by side, not one above the other; status is by definition a ranking. A role exists only as long as it is carried; status persists even when it is not.
